Lauren

‘How are you?’ Zoe asked, coming into the kitchen after Adam had left.

Lauren cradled her cup of coffee. ‘I’m OK, I think. It was a lot to take in.’

‘So what had happened?’

‘He hasn’t cheated on me.’

‘Thank goodness for that. I knew he wouldn’t do that to you.’ Zoe reached out and touched her arm.

‘No, but… he fancied his patient. He walked her home, nearly kissed her.’

‘But he didn’t kiss her?’

‘No, at least that’s what he says.’

‘Do you believe him?’

‘Yes, but… he shouldn’t have let it get that far, should he? He shouldn’t have walked her home.’ Lauren cringed at the thought of Amanda leaning in to kiss him.

‘He made a mistake,’ Zoe said.

‘I know. And he’s apologised.’

‘Do you love him?’

Lauren felt that rush of emotion when she thought of Adam, the longing in her heart to be beside him. ‘I love him so much,’ she said. ‘I just want to make sure I’m thinking things through.’

‘Has he ever given you any reason not to trust him?’

‘Not before Amanda. And he’s doing everything he can to fix that now. He’s told the police about her, and he’s admitted what happened to the partners at work.’

‘So he made a mistake and he’s fixing it?’

‘Yeah.’ Lauren felt better now, her fears about marrying Adam starting to dissipate. She loved him. And she wanted to build a life with him, to have kids together, to grow old together. Perhaps this was just one of the hurdles they’d come up against in their marriage. There’d be more. No marriage was plain sailing.

‘I’m going to go ahead with the wedding,’ Lauren said. ‘It’s what I want and it’s what Adam wants. No matter what Amanda does, she’s not going to stop us.’
